Colordo’s oldest Supporter of Cannabis: SOCOCC

Southern Colorado Cannabis Council

In the Medical Cannabis community, there are countless individuals and organizations that sacrifice their time and effort for the good of the people.  The oldest group in Colorado, founded in 2009, is the Southern Colorado Cannabis Council (SOCOCC).  The council is comprised of industry and community personal that are dedicated to the promotion of health and well-being of medical marijuana patients as well as recreational adult consumers.  SOCOCC provides information and education on self regulation within the Colorado Cannabis Industry.  Other priorities of the SOCOCC are safe access and clean medicine for the entire cannabis community.  Additional concerns are representing the Capital and the overall industry with writing legislation and promotion of a Code of Ethics.  SOCOCC strives to represent patient/ consumer equality and fair laws in both the medical and recreational cannabis movements.

The Southern Colorado Cannabis Council is always looking for new members to help achieve their mission goals in creating a unified voice for the majority of the industry, especially for those that do not have a voice to be heard.  The work of SOCOCC is more broader than just medical cannabis.  They are the voice of the majority (licensees and ancillary businesses).  The Council also tries to bring a voice to policy for individuals who do not have that voice.  The Southern Colorado Cannabis Council is a statewide organization, as well.  Member and volunteer support makes it possible for the industry to continue the momentum to push forward.  SOCOCC’s primary work is in Colorado but also assists other states with their efforts towards legalization of medical and recreational cannabis.

A Simple Book about Medical Cannabis

CANNABIS FOR CHILDREN: A Simple Book About Medical Cannabis

Information on medical cannabis can sometimes be overwhelming, as there is scattered information online or misconceptions built up from generations of misinformation and inadequate studies.  Author Alissa Lee wanted to help others in this situation by writing a book called “Cannabis for Children: A Simple Book about Medical Cannabis”.  This book can help you learn more about starting a medical cannabis treatment for a friend, family member, patient or care recipient.  The information is geared towards primary grades but can also be used to guide disabled adults.  The book is filled with large real life photos along with very clear explanations that describe in detail the process of cannabis treatments.  Side effects of medical cannabis are explored in the book as well as suggestions for activities to help ease the patient.  This easy to read book can also be used by doctors and medical professionals as a handout to patients to assist their first medical cannabis treatments to children or adults under managed care.  As these situations can be stressful, the book takes a non-threatenting and positive approach with realistic portrayals of cannabis medical care.

Report: Opioid Use is Lower in States with Eased Marijuana Laws

Health (D)

New studies are showing that medical marijuana is having a positive effect on the opioid abuse epidemic.  Researchers are suggesting that certain people chose marijuana to treat their pain instead of more dangerous addictive drugs.  This means that there is growing proof that supports the fact that some people substitute medical marijuana over opioids and many other prescription drugs.  The opioid abuse epidemic starts with many people abusing drugs like oxycodone and heroin to address their legitimate pain.  The authors of these newer studies state that people who never receive their first prescription are less likely to become an opioid abuser.
.
W. David Bradford, who is a professor at the University of Georgia, explains “We do know that cannabis is much less risky than opiates, as far as likelihood of dependency.  And certainly there’s no mortality risk.”  Bradford and 3 other colleagues determined that people who have easy access to medical marijuana are less likely to obtain prescription opioid drugs.  Bradford claims “substantial reduction in opiate use.”
.
The data of the studies originated from Medicare, therefore the age group of the data is mostly over 65.  The difference is 14% of the states with medical marijuana and states without.  That is 14% less people using opioids in states that have medical marijuana programs.  To put this percentage into actual number of pills, the study shows this 14% reduction equivalates to a 3.7 million daily dose reduction of opioids.  However the actual number of daily opioid doses being prescribed nationwide is actually increasing every year and this study only had historical data from 2010 – 2015.  If the study took estimated 2018 doses, the actual number of daily opioid doses would be much larger.  The study continues to suggest that more research is needed to investigate the correlation, which is difficult as the federal government regards marijuana as a very dangerous drug and puts tight control on research.

Are you Gold Coin Savvy? Here’s one example ….

gold coin

The 10 Dollar Indian Head Eagle Gold Coin has the highest values of all US old coins, namely due to its gold content and rarity.  The weight of the coin is 16.718 grams.  The composition is 90% gold with the 10% balance made of copper.  The coin was struck regularly from 1907 to 1916 and then sporadically until 1933.  This coin, like many others in the early 1900’s, were part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s push to create more beautiful and artistic designs into the US Coin Program.  This began with the hiring of famous American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to lead the designs of what are still considered today as America’s most alluring coins.  Augustus unfortunately died from cancer prior to the release of the first Indian Head Eagles in 1907, but his legacy in the numismatic world still lives strong today.

The US Government began melting many of these coins in the 1930’s and not many of the 1933 version made it into the public’s hands.  Another interesting fact is that the portrait is not of a female Indian, but a bust of Lady Liberty wearing a Native American Indian Headdress.  Roosevelt insisted that this Indian feathered war bonnet be added as Liberty’s crown, which caused a bit of a grumble at the time.

The values of these coins have a very wide spectrum from $650 to $300,000 and one coin as high as $1.7 million – the Mint State 67 (Graded by the PCGS) 1920 Indian Head Eagle minted in San Francisco.  There is only one of these coins graded this high (70 is the highest rating).  This same coin was sold at auction in 1979 for only $85,000.  At the time $85,000 was a lot for one coin but with a return of investment of $1.7 million …. now that guy is pretty gold savvy.

Does it make Sense to keep minting Cents?

pennies.jpeg

Sometime soon, the US Mint will eventually cease its production of one cent pennies.  The cost to mint a penny by the US Mint is roughly 1.5 cents so essentially losing ½ cent for every penny produced.  Surprisingly since 2010 the amount of pennies produced every year is drastically increasing by about 1 billion pennies per year.

US One Cent Pennies Produced by the US Mint                          Year Produced

4,010,830,000                                                                                       2010

4,938,540,000                                                                                       2011

6,015,200,000                                                                                       2012

7,070,000,000                                                                                       2013

8,146,400,000                                                                                       2014

9,365,300,000                                                                                       2015

That is 39,546,270 billion pennies minted from 2010 thru 2015.  That will fill a lot of wishing wells.  In India, the people have decided on their own to stop using their Indian old coin version of the US Penny.  The 50 Paise coin is equivalent to half of a Rupee making this Indian old coin value less than the value of a US Penny.  Shopkeepers in India refuse to accept the 50 Paise Indian Coin, even though it is still legal tender.  The Indian Government has not announced the elimination of the 50 Paise, but speculation persists that the timing is getting close as the Indian Mints have not produced any of these Indian old coins in a few years.  So while many countries have eliminated their version of the penny or practically halted the production, the US Mint penny machine is chugging along and even increasing production numbers.

US Coins: A sneak peak at the $1 Seated Liberty Silver Coin

Christian Gobrecht, the US Mint’s chief engraver at the time, designed the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar Coin. The Seated Liberty Coin was produced from 1840 through 1873. This coin is called the Seated Liberty as Lady Liberty herself is sitting on a stone holding a pole and a liberty cap while holding a shield in the other hand. The shield is noted with the word LIBERTY.seated liberty

During the 1840-1873 years of production, displayed many changes. In 1853, the price of silver in the coin was higher than the face value which made the coin a problem and led to the coin being taken out of circulation and used only as a trade dollar in the Orient. In 1865, Congress instituted an Act that enforced the words “In God We Trust” be added above the head of the eagle on the reverse of the coin. This 1865 Act led to the 1866 production with this new dictation. In 1870, the price of silver dropped and the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar Coin returned to production. This shift resulted in one of the most rare Seated Liberty Silver Dollars in history when less than a dozen coins were actually produced from the US Mint in San Fransisco. In 1871 and 1872, production rose to more than a million coins but when 1873 hit the silver dollar was not favorable to the US Congress and resulted in the silver content being reduced. This ultimately resulted with the silver dollar coins only able to be used as trade silver dollar in the Orient while back in the US, gold dollars were the standard. This term of history lasted until 1878 when the Morgan Silver Dollar Coin was introduced into production.

The obverse of the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar Coin is the same as the half dime, dime, 20 cent piece, quarter and half dollar produced from 1836 thru 1891. This similiarity leads to many coin collectors wanting to collect all Seated Liberty Coins, not just the Silver Dollar version.

Were there Peace Silver Dollar Coins minted in 1965?

Anthony de Francisci was the designer of the Peace Silver Dollar Coin. Anthony received this honor by winning a limited competition among notable sculptors of the time. de Francisco used his wife Teresa and a Saint Gaudens’ bust under the title Nike Enrini as inspiration for Lady Liberty. This combination resulted in a Lady Liberty that might be the only Art Deco coin in US History due to the the lettering and the tiara on the inspired Lady Liberty being the main Art Deco touches. However the US Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan played a role in the final design. Francisci’s original design had the eagle holding a broken sword as a symbol of peace but when the New York Herald released a short editorial on the coin, there were some broken hearts over the broken sword. Many citizens felt strongly that the broken sword symbolized defeat and the Treasury Department, US Mint, Congress and the White House heard from the public in the form of thousands of letters and telegrams. The broken sword was removed. An olive branch, leaves and berries were added and the mountain peak was modified. This skillfull work so done so well that it wasn’t until 2005 that noteworthy collectors learned of these changes.Peace Dollar

The Peace Silver Dollars were minted in 1921-1928 and again 1934-1935. The 1928 production halt was due to enough production to offset the melting of coins back in 1918. The 1918 Pittman Act required that more than 270 million silver dollars be metled into bullion. The 1934-1935 production was less than 10 million coins minted. This relatively small production run was only done as a sign by the government to demonstrate to the silver states that the US was still interested in using silver in the standard dollar coins. Most current day coin enthusiasts and collectors associate the “Peace” name of the coin due to the word PEACE on the reverse of the coin right under the eagle, however the Peace Dollars were named long before the design was created. The Nation was looking for a hopeful sentiment in post World War I times, hence the name Peace Dollar. In 1921 when the first coins were struck, the relief on the coin was so high and prominent that the coins could not be fully struck.

The Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars have varieties in the coins due to the dies used. These varieties are also known as VAMs. Author and coin researchers Jeff Oxman and Dr. David Close have led the catalogue and identification process of the VAM’s of the Peace Silver Dollar Coin. Some of the more famous VAMs would be a die break in the 1922 Philadelphia Peace Dollar that looks like Lady Liberty is wearing an earring while another die break in the same year and mint hints at a Lady Liberty mustache.

In 1965, the Peace Silver Dollar nearly returned back into circulation as 300,000 coins were minted as a trial. These coins were struck in Denver and minted with the date of 1964 in compliance to the Coinage Act of 1965 since this act eliminated the silver content of every coin except for the Kennedy Half Dollar, which had been reduced to just 40%. These 300,000 coins were ultimately melted however there are always rumors of some coins sneaking out of the mint. This would be illegal so don’t expect any 1965 Peace Silver Dollar Coins showing up in an auction any time soon. This would officially make 1935 the last year the Peace Silver Dollars were minted by the US Mint.
